The evolving role of credit union core systems

Posted On Dec 18 2020 by

first_img ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr by: Roy UrricoCore systems have always been the lifeblood of credit unions. Whether they exist on premises or on a cloud, core systems now connect multiple channels, including mobile, and affect profitability.Traditionally, core systems have been the back-end data applications that process all transactions that occurred during the day and post updated data on account balances to a mainframe system. They’ve typically encompassed deposit account, loan and credit processing, and have interfaced to general ledger and reporting tools. However, core has developed into much more than that. “You go back a decade, 15 or 20 years, and core was considered much more in isolation,” Santo Cannone, chief product officer, credit union solutions for the Brookfield, Wis.-based Fiserv, pointed out. “Today’s credit union core is a significant piece of highly interconnected parts that includes branch, online, mobile and ATM channels. Core accounting, back-end, front-end, and platform are still important elements, but now your biggest branch is open 24/7. It is a very different valuation than it used to be.” continue reading »last_img read more

VP Ma’ruf promotes cornea donation to help the blind

Posted On Oct 19 2020 by

first_imgEye donation is still lacking in Indonesia, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin said on Thursday, while pointing out that it could be the answer to help those suffering from visual impairment.Ma’ruf said 3 percent of the population were blind, according to the government’s data. Of those people, 4.5 percent are blind as a result of corneal damage. “Corneal damage can be cured through eye donation. But the practice is still very rare in Indonesia,” he said in his speech during the virtual launch of the Cornea Donation Center (CDD) at Undaan Eye Hospital in Surabaya, East Java on Thursday as reported by kompas.com.He commended the opening of the center, which he said was a response to manage visual impairment cases in the country. He expressed hope that the center would make it possible for residents, especially those living in Surabaya, to donate their corneas when they die.He also urged the hospital to promote eye donation, as it is still considered a new thing, unlike blood drives, to increase people’s awareness to help the blind.Ma’ruf further said it would be beneficial for everyone as one corneal donor could be used by five recipients.“Right now, there are 70 hopeful donor recipients for one cornea across the world,” the senior Muslim cleric said, adding that those with visual impairment could get help if more people donated their corneas. ‘I want to see Klopp at Bayern’ – Beckenbauer

Posted On Aug 13 2020 by

first_imgShare on: WhatsApp Berlin, Germany | AFP | German football legend Franz Beckenbauer said Monday that he wants to see Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp in the Bayern Munich dugout. As Germany celebrated Klopp’s success in last Saturday’s Champions League final, Beckenbauer told Bild newspaper that he was desperate to see the former Dortmund coach join Bundesliga champions Bayern.“I want nothing more than to see Klopp come to Bayern one day, it would be a good fit,” said the 73-year-old, who won five German titles with Bayern as a player and a coach.Klopp’s first Champions League title was met with widespread celebration in the German sports media. On Monday, Kicker magazine carried the headline “King Klopp” on its front page, and described the Liverpool manager as “the face of German football”.Beckenbauer echoed those sentiments in an interview with Bild, calling Klopp “one of the best coaches in the world”. “Juergen brought a new type of football to Germany… what he began in Dortmund, he has refined in Liverpool.”Liverpool are reportedly looking to extend Klopp’s contract, which currently runs until 2022.Yet Beckenbauer questioned whether 51-year-old would stay on Merseyside in the long term.“I think that a job in England robs you of energy. As a manager in the Premier League, you have more responsibility than as a coach in the Bundesliga,” he told Bild.“With the two cup competitions and the slightly larger league, the amount of games is considerably higher than it is in Germany.”center_img FILE PHOTO: Jurgen Klopplast_img read more

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Seeking Quick Unemployment Payments

first_imgKitchen quoted the governor on those statements while making his plea to the judge.“They had their shot at this, too little, too late, something has to be done, all the king’s horses and all the king’s men cannot fix the system,” he said, adding, “Fifty years ago we put a man on the moon but we can’t enroll people in an unemployment system.”Dempsey ultimately said she had no choice but to grant the state’s request, adding that she does not “have the authority to rewrite the statute or to create a whole new pay and chase system.”The DEO dashboard states that more than $1 billion has been paid to claimants as of Wednesday, which translates to at least one payment being sent to 481,487 people. In addition, more than 1.1 million people in the state have filled for unemployment benefits since mid-March.Gov. DeSantis this week asked the inspector general to investigate the $77.9 million contract under which the CONNECT site was built seven years ago. A judge granted a motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed against the State of Florida and its unemployment benefit system operators on Wednesday. The lawsuit had been filed by attorneys representing Floridians who are awaiting their unemployment payments due to the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. The hearing was held by phone and through a virtual meeting.Attorneys for the state told Circuit Court Judge Angela Dempsey about steps that officials have taken to get the problematic CONNECT system working and processing payments and applications. One of the attorneys for Gov. Ron DeSantis said Florida law does not have provisions for residents to receive immediate checks. She added there are numerous state and federal requirements that must be met in order to avoid fraud.“We are doing the best we can with the system and the resources we have,” she explained. “It’s not as fast as we would like, it’s not as fast as you would like.”On the other hand, attorney Gautier Kitchen, who represents the residents, suggested the state pay everyone and confirm unemployment later, adding that the DEO is “deterring, delaying and denying. They can pay and chase just like they do with Medicare.”DeSantis has previously called the CONNECT system a “clunker” that was not designed to withstand any type of surge in usage.last_img read more

Cisco to build R215m innovation centre

Posted On Dec 19 2019 by

first_img17 September 2008Multinational information communication technology (ICT) company Cisco Systems is to invest R215-million in developing the Cisco Innovation Hub Technology Centre in Pretoria. The 3 000 square metre centre, to be based at the Innovation Hub, will become home to the company’s various ICT initiatives, which are expected to add R1-billion to South Africa’s gross domestic product over an initial five-year period. The initiative includes an InnovationLab, a global talent acquisition programme, the Cisco Netversity, an entrepreneurship institute and a software development programme.Cisco Systems South Africa MD Steve Midgley said the investment was worthwhile, seeing that emerging markets provided the biggest opportunity for social and economic transformation.“South Africa is on the brink of entering a broadband boom,” Midgley said in a statement this week.“Cisco is investing in this initiative now to ensure that when the broadband revolution really kicks off, South Africa has enough of the right kind of skills, solutions creation capabilities and intellectual property to leverage the many benefits broadband will bring to the country and help leap-frog other economies.”Advanced technology incubationAs an advanced technology incubation centre, the facility will foster and develop skills, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and solution development capabilities in South Africa’s ICT sector. This includes the development of intellectual property, the creation of design and network engineers, local software development, state-of-the-art networking communications laboratories and access to business guidance. The centre will also provide a showcase for venture capital providers looking to fund solutions or businesses that may result from the centre’s operations.Cisco added that it expects the centre to have far-reaching implications, and to create a minimum of 200 direct and 800 indirect jobs.ICT initiativesVarious ICT initiatives that Cisco will conduct from the centre include: Operated by a team of consulting and development entrepreneurs, the InnovationLab has been running since the beginning of 2008 and focuses on developing technology solutions to solve common business challenges in the South African market.  With a growing shortage of skilled networking professionals in South Africa and around the world, the global talent acquisition programme seeks to create high level network engineers at a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) level in an accelerated pace.  The Netversity meanwhile aims to create a minimum of 150 network design engineers for the local market, at Cisco’s cost, through an experiential architecture and design training programme.  Cisco aims to train 250 entrepreneurs through its entrepreneur institute, with the first intake of students graduating before the end of 2008. The institute is a non-profit endeavour that will teach entrepreneurial skills with a curriculum that covers various aspects such as starting, growing and tech-enabling a business.  As part of the software development programme, Cisco will invest in software engineers to address the demand for software development skills in South Africa. Located at the centre, the programme will focus on developing applications for Cisco’s own business requirements. “This will change the way people live and work – giving the public sector and business the opportunity to gain significant efficiencies, to drive productivity enhancements, to achieve cost reductions and to gain access to new market segments within their existing business models,” said Midgley.“It will also create an enabling platform from which new business models can be created.”SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Or you, perhaps, you can point to the Trimensional iPhone app, which thanks to its latest update, now lets you scan and then print a 3D model of your face.Trimensional describes itself as a 3D scanner for iPhone, and before you make plans to use the app to scan and print all manner of 3D models, it’s worth noting that the app only works with faces right now. Trimensional uses the screen and the front-facing camera on an iPhone to detect patterns of light reflected off your face in order to build a 3D model. An update to the app that hit the App Store this week lets you send a movie or animated GIF file of the rotating 3D model to friends. And with a $5 in-app purchase (the app itself is a dollar), you can send the scan to a 3D printer. “Within about half an hour, ” says Grant Schindler, a research scientist at Georgia Tech, “you can go from scanning yourself to having a physical copy.”OK, I don’t actually own a 3D printer, but I want one, particularly if, as this app certainly portends, someday I’ll be able to snap photos with my iPhone and then print the image as a three-dimensional object. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more
