GreenPalm raises $4m

Posted On Apr 21 2021 by

first_imgOver $4m has been raised so far from the sale of GreenPalm certificates, since the start of the scheme 18 months ago, and there are plans for a European roll-out.The $4m figure equates to the sale of 460,000 certificates, said Bob Norman, general manager  of Book&Claim, which operates the Green-Palm certificate trading platform, endorsed by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). This allows manufacturers and retailers to support sustainable palm oil production. “That $4m is the actual payment that goes back to sustainable palm oil producers,” said Norman, at the Baking Industry Exhibition earlier this week. He told BB that the organisation is beginning to see interest from mainland Europe and plans to expand the GreenPalm scheme out across the continent soon. The scheme is run by fats supplier AAK and certificates can be purchased for every tonne of palm oil used by a company. This premium is then paid to farmers producing an equivalent amount of sustainable palm oil. Certificates cost around $8, while a tonne of palm oil is around $650. “A dollar from every certificate sold also goes to the RSPO,” explained Norman. The scheme has attracted interest from a number of major brands. For example, in February this year, Burton’s Foods announced it was the first UK sweet biscuit manufacturer to acquire GreenPalm certificates for 100% of its palm oil usage.last_img read more

Breaking: Mica repair scheme plans confirmed

Posted On Dec 21 2019 by

first_imgThe Government has pledged €20million for a Mica and Pyrite repair scheme for homes in Donegal and Mayo.Homeowners will have to pay 10% of the cost of repairs under the special scheme which was announced today. The Government is to pay 90% of the cost of repairing homes affected by defective concrete blocks, which means that homeowners could have to contribute thousands of euro to complete the works. Plans for the long-awaited special scheme were confirmed during a top-level meeting and are expected to be brought before Donegal County Council next week.It is estimated at as many as 4,800 dwellings in Donegal and 345 homes in Mayo are affected by Mica-defective blocks.Homeowners waited anxiously for details of a repair scheme following the Government’s commitment in October 2018 to repair properties impacted by the issue. Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh and Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring said that the worst-hit homes will be fixed first as the €20million repair scheme is rolled out. Ministers McHugh and Ring met with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Ministers Paschal Donohoe and Eoghan Murphy today to lay out the plans for the scheme. The exceptional nature of the problem and special measures which are required to address it were taken into account before plans were agreed.September 2018: Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Minister Joe McHugh see the effects of MICA on an Inishowen home. The Mica/Pyrite scheme will be financed from central Government over a number of years through the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government and administered and operated at a local authority level in Donegal and Mayo.Experts on the scheme from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government will travel to Donegal next week for discussions with the County Council to advise on any remaining preparations for the roll out of the scheme.“Government agreement for the scheme is about protecting people in their homes,” Minister McHugh said.“It is about ensuring people feel secure and safe in the place where they have set down roots, where they are building a life, rearing a family and planning for their futures.” Minister Ring said: “The scheme is an exceptional measure in response to an exceptional need. Some homeowners are in dire straits. And this is the confirmation that these people need that the Government is to pay 90% of the cost of repairing affected homes.”Minister McHugh paid tribute to the many families who have been living through the Mica crisis every day for many years.  Mc Hugh said: “It has been a long road for the many families living with this scandal and we hope now that this scheme gives them some peace of mind.“I want to acknowledge the work of the Mica Action Group and in particular Eileen Doherty and Ann Owens and other members who have shared their stories and opened their doors to explain the conditions they are living in. The people affected by this have shown immense patience, determination and fortitude in working with us to secure this resolution.”Mr McHugh added: “The person who first brought this crisis to Government attention was Donegal Fine Gael councillor Bernard McGuinness. Senator Paudie Coffey was also instrumental in pursuing this when he set up the expert group to investigate Mica issues in Donegal and Mayo and Minister of State Damien English has been a constant support.” Breaking: Mica repair scheme plans confirmed was last modified: May 17th, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:MICAlast_img read more

Judge tells paedo he will go to jail for abusing young footballer

Posted On Dec 21 2019 by

first_imgA FORMER youth footballer faced his coach who sexually assaulted him, as the ‘sick and evil actions’ were recalled in court.John Paul Foley, who has waived anonymity, recalled how he has been dealing for 25 years with the actions of his former coach, Michael Murray, who appeared before Letterkenny Circuit Court in relation to the incident. Detective Sergeant Michael Troy said that Mr Foley came forward to Wexford Garda Station in February 2017, to make a complaint.Mr Foley was between 10 and 12 years of age and a player at Rosslare Strand FC in Wexford when the assault took place.Ms Fiona Crawford BL, prosecuting, said Murray pleaded guilty to the charge.Murray, now 49 and living at a nursing home in Letterkenny, has four previous convictions, arising from four counts of indecent assault on a victim dating back to 1989 in Derry. The Court heard that Mr Foley joined Rosslare Strand FC when he was nine and how they used to train on the pitch at the community centre every Saturday. He remembered Murray as being known by the nickname, ‘Derry’, where the former coach is originally from.Mr Foley recalled being brought into the community centre by Murray and taken onto the stage. Murray sat on a chair and instructed Mr Foley to sit on his knee before removing his tracksuit bottoms and underpants and sexually assaulting the young footballer. Mr Foley recalled being startled when he thought he heard the door open and ran out. He believed that he would ‘get into trouble if I told anyone’.Mr Foley left Rosslare Strand FC and transferred to another club in the area a short time later.Murray was arrested at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Letterkenny on August 24, 2017 and later admitted to the charge. “The abuse act itself mightn’t have lasted for a long time but, for me, it’s something I have been dealing with for 25 years,” Mr Foley said in court. He told Murray: “I could stand here today and tell how my childhood was taken away by your actions, but it wasn’t just my childhood.“You took away my adult life when you took advantage of your position. You left me feeling numb.“For years, I blamed myself for the events of that day, asking myself why didn’t I fight back or why didn’t I tell someone? Hopefully, now I will be able to let things go and put my mind to rest.“After you did this, I thought: ‘Who can I tell? Who will believe me? Who will believe a boy over a grown man?’ In the mind of a child, I thought that I would be in trouble and I pushed what happened to me way inside of me and pretended that it didn’t happen. “To this day, if I’m in a crowd or someone is standing too close to me, it brings me back to that day and I get the fear again of being back to being that small, scared boy again. “Today, things are different. I’m not the boy who looked up to you – I’m a grown man looking down on you, knowing that my life will get better knowing that you, Michael Murray, are finally being held accountable for you sick and evil actions.”Mr Foley told how he underwent treatment for depression and it was during this period in 2016 that he first began to talk about the abuse. He said: “When I finally informed my parents, in August 2017 of what had happened, their response was to blame themselves. I had to watch my mother and father cry because they felt guilty for not being there to protect me and apologise for it. No parent should have to have to feel that way.”Defence counsel, Mr Sean McGee BL, said Murray was ‘extremely remorseful’.“He wishes, for what it might be worth, to unreservedly apologise for the devastation he has so obviously caused,” Mr McGee said. The Court heard that Murray had himself encountered sexual abuse as a child, aged eight at the hands of a contemporary of his father and by a boy who was older than him. Murray’s brother died after being struck by a British Army vehicle on Easter Sunday, 1981.Murray now uses a wheelchair and has been in nursing home care since 2011 and had ‘very demanding and increasing needs’.He requires dialyses three times a week, suffers from diabetes, and an inflammatory disorder that has left him morbidly obese. In 2017 he had an above-knee amputation of his right leg.Mr McGee said: “He sees his current situation as retribution and the life sentence he deserves.”Judge John Aylmer asked for the state prosecution to establish whether the prison service has the capacity to deal with someone such as Murray, who is receiving life-maintaining treatment. The matter was adjourned until January for the imposition of a sentence. Judge Aylmer said that his starting point would be a ‘significant custodial sentence’.Judge tells paedo he will go to jail for abusing young footballer was last modified: November 12th, 2019 by Chris McNultyShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegalMichael Murraysex assaultWexfordlast_img read more

ICC officially rules out Eden Garden as World Cup matches venue

Posted On Nov 28 2019 by

first_imgThe International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally conveyed to the BCCI about its inability to hold the India vs England World Cup match at the Eden Gardens on February 27.The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a release of ICC conveying its inability to hold the match at Eden Gardens on February 27.The Cricket Board said it has recommended Bangalore as the alternate venue for the match.”The ICC has conveyed to the BCCI that it will not be able to hold the India Vs England match of the ICC CWC 2011 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on 27 February 2011.”The BCCI has recommended Bengaluru as the alternate venue,” BCCI Secretary & President-Elect N Srinivasan said in the release. The hectic political lobbying that was on for the past 48 hours since it was announced that Eden’s marquee match will be shifted went in vain with the BCCI announcing ICC’s verdict. The last ditch effort by West Bengal Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee didn’t yield any results. Since morning, there were rumours in the CAB corridors that ICC might just consider the plea to extend the deadline of completion of work till February 7.Even former BCCI president and Cricket Association of Bengal supremo Jagmohan Dalmiya who had a telephonic conversation with ICC president Sharad Pawar expressed a glimmer of hope as he was assured that ICC would send an e-mail intimating them about the list of dos.”I have spoken to Pawar, N Srinivasan, Arun Jaitley, Ratnakar Shetty not less than five to six times.”Pawar is updating me about his whereabouts and in the afternoon — around 2.30pm — said the letter would come in half an hour. But we are yet to receive anything,” an upset Dalmiya told reporters before he received the killer blow in the form of a final rejection from the ICC. said. It’s been a terrible setback for CAB that even someone as important as Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s intervention couldn’t tilt the scales in CAB’s favour. So devastated was Dalmiya after hearing the news that he confined himself in his chamber at the DR B.C.Roy Club House at Eden Gardens and refused to come out.”I have lot of things to sort out and I can’t talk to the media today,” he literally ran for cover as the waiting mediapersons hounded him.The joint secretary of the state association Biswarup Dey conceded that it’s all over for Eden Gardens as of now.”We all thought that we have got a lifeline but now it seems that all hopes of having the match are over. I am speechless. If the best efforts from chief minister aren’t enough, what can we say? But I would definitely raise this question at the BCCI meeting that how Bangalore can get two matches when it was decided all centres will get a match each,” was his feeble argument.advertisementEden Gardens can still host other matches if it is ready: ICCThe ICC on Sunday rejected BCCI’s appeal to reconsider its decision to take away India-England cricket World Cup match from Kolkata but its president Sharad Pawar said the Eden Gardens can host the other three ties if it is ready on time.”The first match may not take place there but the rest of the three matches could have a chance if the requirements are fulfilled,” Pawar told reporters in New Delhi.”We have written to BCCI regarding this. I spoke to BCCI president Shashank Manohar to get the stadium ready so that other matches are staged there,” he added. The historic 100,000 capacity stadium lost the right to host the crucial February 27 India-England tie after failing to meet the completion deadline for renovation work. The BCCI at the behest of the Cricket Association of Bengal appealed to the ICC to extend the completion deadline for the tie to February 7.Even West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee tried his bit and asked two of his ministers to get in touch with former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and put in all possible efforts to bring the match back to the city. But Pawar on Sunday said he tried his best but his efforts ended in smoke.”I personally tried intervening after the Chief Minister of West Bengal requested me to do so. But when the ICC team arrived there, the ground was not ready,” he said.CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya had also called on Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and even personally spoke to Pawar regarding the issue but all efforts went in vain with ICC rejecting the plea on Sunday.Earlier in the day, Dalmiya had said that he was waiting for a letter from the ICC specifying the reasons why Eden Gardens was dropped.”It’s no hidden treasure. But by seeing this at least we will have the satisfaction why we were not given an opportunity … This is just a reasonable request,” Dalmiya had said.”We want to know what the ICC’s expectation, concerns etc are. What is our fault…? We all are peeved, but with all humbleness we are making a polite request. We are not here to create an acrimony.”Asked about Dalmiya’s outburst, Pawar did not respond. The India-England clash was to be the only match featuring the co-hosts at the venue and the other scheduled clashes mostly feature minnows.South Africa-Ireland (March 15), Netherlands-Ireland (March 18) and Zimbabwe-Kenya (March 20) are the other games scheduled at the venue advertisementlast_img read more
