first_imgHave you ever really stopped to think about how secure those hotel keycards and electronic locks are? If you thought that it would be very possible for someone to hack an electronic hotel lock, you’d be right. And if you thought hacking one such lock would lead to a vulnerability of millions of others, then you’re just like three men who managed to do exactly that.Security expert Matthew Jakubowski, along with two other guys who apparently had nothing better to do, managed to create a device that can infiltrate the bottom of a hotel door lock, thus enabling access. Because hotels are so standardized these days, this one vulnerability spans locations around the world and is the same kind of technology used in no fewer than four million hotel rooms. The bottom section of the lock is intended to be used with a device that hotel operators use to customize master keys for maids and other staff. The average guest has probably never even realized there was an extra point of access hidden there. The potential for such a hack was first demonstrated over the summer at the Black Hat security conference. Of course, there is a fine line between concept and execution, and even though it might be possible to hack through a hotel door lock, no one is going to sit outside a hotel room with a lot of hacking equipment so it was a moot point. This newest creation, though, is inconspicuous as you can get. The hacking mechanisms were housed inside a standard dry erase marker, so all that the hacker needs to do is insert the tip of the marker into the lock — granted, still not normal behavior but something that a genuine thief or criminal could slip through without being noticeable. The company responsible for the popular locks, Onity, has promised that it is going to find a fix to this exploit.More at Spiderlabs, via Forbeslast_img
