first_imgEntertainment juggernaut Sony has received permission to complete it’s record purchase of the publishing catalog owned by the Michael Jackson estate. The sale, which was under review by the European Commission, comes amid huge industry protests from Warner Music and Impala, a group that represents independent music companies, who claim that this new purchase will give Sony an unfair market advantage, as the deal will give them a 28% share of the global songwriting market. Given that Sony and Jackson’s publishing company, ATV Music Publishing, had been operating as a joint venture since 1995, it’s not necessarily a shock that this was approved.Back in the 80s, Paul McCartney told a young Michael Jackson how lucrative it was to owning music publishing, so Jackson went out and purchased ATV, which, to the chagrin of McCartney, contained the majority of the Lennon/McCartney songwriting catalog from their days in The Beatles. in 1995, Jackson combined ATV with Sony, and now, seven years after his untimely death, Jackson’s estate is finally able to sell the full catalog to their long-time partner. The deal between Sony and ATV is for a whopping $750 Million, which is sure to be a huge boon to Jackson’s estate. The list of artists under ATV control is massive and filled with mega-stars. See below for a few of the bigger names, to give you an idea of just how huge this deal is.ATV Music Publishing Artists:Beck, Beyoncé, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, Coldplay, Eminem, Gorillaz, James Brown, Jay-Z, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, Kraftwerk, Lady Gaga, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Pharrell Williams, R.
