(Photo by Tim Warner/Getty Images)The Rice Owls are certainly not a dominant football program at the moment, but they have produced some pretty impressive players in recent years. Defensive tackle Zach Abercrumbia could be the next to finish his college career at a big program after graduating from the Houston school.Abercrumbia is a 6-foot-2, 285 pound defensive tackle, a major position of need for many teams. This season, he recorded 55 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, both good for third on the team, and led the Owls with two fumble recoveries in 2018.The Dallas native was named an honorable mention All-Conference USA player by the league’s coaches, and third-team by Phil Steele. Now, he’ll finish his college career elsewhere.Abercrumbia announced that he would be a graduate transfer on Twitter last week.In the days since, numerous big programs have reportedly reached out to express their interest.Texas, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, and Iowa are among the big programs after Zach Abercrumbia. He spoke to Texas blog Burnt Orange Nation about the process thus far.A week ago, Rice Owls defensive tackle Zach Abercrumbia announced his intentions to become a graduate transfer and the Longhorns have already been in contact with him, Abercrumbia told Burnt Orange Nation:As a May graduate, Abercrumbia will enroll at the school of his choice for summer classes before using his final season of eligibility. And there’s already plenty of interest in him, as the 6’2, 285-pounder has set up official visits to Mississippi State (Jan. 25) and Iowa (Feb. 1) and also plans to take an unofficial visit to SMU.Other schools that have been in contact with Abercrumbia include Michigan, Memphis, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Oregon State, Penn State, TCU, Toledo, Tulane, and Vanderbilt.Texas wound up landing last year’s big Rice transfer, offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, who promoted his former teammate after he announced the move. All conference DT and captain. Talented, smart, versatile, explosive at the POA and ready/willing to work. Love this guy. He deserves a good home ?? https://t.co/IEOsK1eS7h— Calvin Anderson (@THE_CONDA25) January 8, 2019The Longhorns certainly seem like they’d have an inside track here, but there are plenty of strong options listed there, and Iowa and Mississippi State have already landed visits which is important. We should know more in the coming weeks.[Burnt Orange Nation]last_img read more
