Citation: Comet Hale-Bopp finally goes dormant as it passes Neptune (2011, May 4) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2011-05-comet-hale-bopp-dormant-neptune.html The great cometary show The comet Hale-Bopp, likely the most studied and/or observed comet in human history, was visible to casual observers for nearly 18 months as it swooped past, coming as close as 1.315 AU (1AU = one Sun-Earth distance) to us, before once again heading off into the far reaches of our solar system. First seen by amateur astronomer’s Alan Hale, and Thomas Bopp, the comet drew international attention as it was the brightest that had been seen in the sky in several decades, and because it endured for so long in the night sky.In a paper published in arXiv, Gyula Szabó of Konkoly Observatory in Hungary, and his two colleagues Krisztián Sárneczky, an amateur astronomer from Hungary and László Kiss of the University of Sydney in Australia, note that after 15 years, Hale-Bopp appears to have finally moved far enough from the sun (30.7 AU) that it’s coma (envelope or cocoon that is formed by ice sublimating in space) has finally diminished to the point where it’s almost nonexistent. After reaching its perihelion (closest point to the sun) on April 1, 1997, the comet has ever since been rushing the other way with very little fanfare, though it was noted briefly in 2007, also by Szabó, that it still had a very visible coma at 25.7 AU.Szabó and his team in 2007 also took note of the temperature of the surface of Hale-Bopp at the time and found it to be 53.1 K (-220 Celsius or -364 Fahrenheit) and because the comet is now seen to be freezing to death, they believe that it can be inferred that comets like Hale-Bopp, seem to die at about 50-53 K.This marks the farthest distance that a comet has ever been studied from, and gives scientists new insights into how far a comet must travel from the sun before it goes dormant, something that might work to our advantage as scientists in the future try to discern the behavior of comets that might pose a threat to us by passing too close; though we won’t have to worry about Hale-Bopp any time soon, since it won’t be heading our way again for another 2500 years. © 2010 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) — In a joint mission to find out how Hale-Bopp, the comet that inspired news all over the world back in 1996/97, when it was at its closest to Earth, has been doing since it headed away from us, astronomer’s from Hungary and Australia working together at the European observatory in Chile found that nearly fifteen years, later, Hale-Bopp, the messy, sometimes spectacular comet, has finally gone quiet. Kiss, arXiv:1104.4351v1 [astro-ph.EP] arxiv.org/abs/1104.4351AbstractComet Hale–Bopp (C/1995 O1) has been the single most significant comet encountered by modern astronomy, still having displayed significant activity at 25.7 AU solar distance in late 2007. It is a puzzling question when and where this activity will finally cease. Here we present new observations with the ESO 2.2m telescope at La Silla to check the activity of Hale–Bopp at 30.7 AU solar distance. On 2010-12-04, 26 CCD images were taken with 180 s exposure times for photometry and morphology. The comet was detected in R and had a total brightness of 23.3+-0.2 mag, referring to an absolute brightness of R(1,1,0)=8.3. The profile of the coma was star-like at a seeing of 1.9″, without any evidence of a coma or tail extending farther than 2.5″ (=55,000 km in projection) and exceeding 26.5 mag/arcs^2 surface brightness. The measured total brightness corresponds to a relative total reflecting surface, a_RC, of 485 km^2, nine times less than three years before. The calculated a_RC value would imply a nucleus with 60–65 km radius assuming 4% albedo. This size estimate is in significant contradiction with the previous results scattering around 35 km. Therefore we suggest that the comet may still be in a low-level activity, despite the lack of a prominent coma. Alternatively, if the nucleus is already dormant, the albedo should be as high as 13%, assuming a radius of 35 km. With this observation, Hale–Bopp has been the most distant comet ever observed, far beyond the orbit of Neptune. Comet Hale-Bopp’s sodium tail. Credit: European Hale-Bopp team.
(Phys.org) — Remember when a phone used to be a phone? Not a camera, restaurant finder, music player, social networking check-in, or mini game diversion? A new survey makes it official. Engaging in phone calls has fallen down into the Etcetera of features use category. According to a study of 2,000 smartphone users, the time spent talking on phone is just 12 minutes a day, out of the two hours a day spent using the phones. According to O2’s “All About You” report from the UK, just browsing the Internet is the most frequent activity on smartphones, accounting for 25 minutes a day. Checking and updating social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter consume 17 minutes against the frailer 12 minutes to talk in a phone call. Press release More information: Young, affluent snap up smartphones © 2012 Phys.Org Explore further Among the usage and time breakdowns featured in the report: Smartphone users browsing the Internet (25 minutes a day), social networking (17 minutes), listening to music (16 minutes), playing games (13 minutes), and e-mail (11 minutes). Other activities that the survey timed were reading books, watching videos, and taking pictures, all for a total of 128 minutes. The “All About You” report announced Friday from mobile provider O2, which is the commercial brand of Telefónica UK Limited, was commissioned by O2 to mark the launch of the Samsung Galaxy SIII.David Johnson, General Manager Devices for O2 in the UK, said, “Smartphones are now being used like a digital ‘Swiss Army Knife’ replacing possessions like watches, cameras, books and even laptops.” He said the phone now plays a far greater role in all aspects of daily life. More than half, 54 percent, are using their phones instead of alarm clocks; 46 percent have stopped wearing a watch in favor of the smart phone; 39% percent have switched from using a standalone camera to using the smartphone; and more than a quarter use their phone instead of a laptop. The findings conveniently prop the new Samsung Galaxy SIII, which is rich in “next generation” functions. The phone provides S Voice,’ described as an advanced natural language user interface, to listen and respond to the user’s words, and carries eye-tracking such that the screen remains bright if the user is looking at it.While the survey findings of how the smartphone is used may not surprise most people, there are a few points of interest in the study as to how much more far-reaching the Swizz Army Knife of mobile devices may become, notwithstanding the expected leveling off of smartphone sales. One in twenty smartphone users have switched to use their phone in place of a TV (six percent) or reading physical books (six percent). Kohl or kajal is the basic thing required to highlight eyes. But how about giving it a personal touch? Here’s how to make kajal sitting at home.Take a lamp and fill it with oil or ghee. Keep aside a teaspoon of it.Make a wick with cotton, soak in ghee and place it in the lamp. Light the wick.Place blocks on either side of the lamp and ensure there is no breeze. Keep a silver plate upside down over the lamp, resting between the supports. Place the plate about half an inch above the lamp with the flame tip touching the plate.Let the lamp burn overnight to collect the soot on the inside of the plate.Remove the plate after the flame is extinguished. Scrape the thick coating of carbon, black powdery residue collected on the cover. Cool and add ghee drop by drop to make the soot smooth.Store in the refrigerator for two hours. You can store at room temperature thereafter. Since homemade kajal is very dark so apply it overnight and wash face in the morning or after bath. The remaining kajal leaves a beautiful and natural tint on your eyes.
Sri Lanka’s main Muslim party, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Sunday joined the opposition to oppose Mahinda Rajapaksa’s bid to win a third term.SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem announced his resignation as justice minister in the Rajapaksa government, Xinhua reported. “I have sent my resignation to the president,” he told the media. The SLMC decision to back opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena followed several rounds of discussions.Relations between the government and the Muslim community, which makes up about 10 percent of Sri Lanka’s 20.4 million population, have been tense due to hardline Buddhist groups.Hakeem accused these groups of inciting communal violence in the southern towns of Aluthgama and Beruwala that left two people dead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Armed Forces jawans, who had to give up their jobs prematurely, would be covered by One Rank, One Pension (OROP) benefits announced by the government on Saturday. Welcoming the government’s decision, the agitating ex-servicemen decided to call off their hunger strike but would continue their stir till all the “sticky” issues are resolved. Addressing a press conference at Jantar Mantar, Major General (Retd) Satbir Singh, leader of the association leading the agitation, said the protest will continue till four specific points raised by ex-servicemen were accepted by the government. They only misled you and committed sins. They want to score political points….Oneupmanship will not help the nation,” he said, referring to criticism of the package by the Congress leadership. The veterans, who have been pressing for OROP for four decades, on Saturday won a partial victory with the government announcing that it would implement it, but the veterans rejected the package and decided to continue their agitation. The issue of whether the scheme would cover ex-servicemen who have taken premature retirement had emerged as a major sticking point. They met Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday and later said his clarification in this regard was “satisfying”. With Prime Minister’s assurance, the matter seems to have simmered down for now.
Ashima-Leena, known and recognised for their unique style, reflect the ancient traditions of Indian craftsmanship in a contemporary vocabulary. Ashima-Leena are proud to unveil their bridal/couture collection 2016, ‘Mehr-un-Nissa’ – a visual portrayal encapsulating the dichotomous flavours of Mughal Emperor Jahangir’s most beloved Queen. Dripping in diamonds and pearls, an artful visionary, Mehr-un-Nissa proved to be a beacon of femininity and modernity. Similar to an intricate tapestry wound together by golden silks, this whimsical soul was forged not only by classic values and a penchant for the arts, but also by social responsibility and an unbridled will. She transcended societal norms at the time, reveling in traditional roles and forms of study, as well as taking unprecedented interest in political and court affairs. Multi-faceted as she was, Mehr-un-Nissa, proved to be the epitome of a modern Maharani, strong willed and dedicated but doused in softness and femininity. Adding dimension to what is reminiscent of Mughal rule, paisleys and florals are punctuated with modern streaks of pattern and vivid colour – antique textile crafting entwining stand-alone aesthetics to produce an air of innovative intricacy. The same technique transposes heavy and superfluous embroidery, lending buoyancy and royalty to traditionalism, a modern brush of beautiful detail. During a period when the Mughal Empire was at the very peak of its power and glory, she dared to challenge what was expected of her, all the while unafraid to exhibit womanly charm. Similarly, Ashima-Leena endeavours to recreate a sense of Mughal royalty without relying upon redundant elements; class and innovation are the two ideals laced together to create a couture/bridal collection that exemplifies the lavishness of the time. Without forsaking vivacity, Ashima-Leena’s bridal/couture collection 2016 is translated through a classic aesthetic and tailored to a woman who is both charismatic and influential – a modern depiction of Mehr-un-Nissa, today’s modern Maharani. Prominence on textile, attention to detail, fabric development and complex grand embroideries are the trademarks of the ingenuity of the brand.

State Director of Health Services Ajay Chakraborty cautioned the health establishments treating dengue patients to be very careful and vigilant for at least two days even when fever of a patient goes down. “These two days after the remission of fever is extremely critical. Registering saline in a customised manner and monitoring of blood pressure, urine, pulse rate and respiration of the patient every four hours is very much necessary,” Chakraborty said. He added that the state Health department has already circulated a treatment protocol on its website and has commenced training of doctors and nurses to handle dengue patients in an efficient manner. “Our main focus will be to ensure that there is not a single death due to dengue as we believe that it is not at all a fatal disease,” he maintained.
Since the start of the Olympic Games in 776 BC, outstanding athletes have set records and become famous in both ancient Greece and in modern times. Olympic records have a long and storied history. The outrage over the pass interference non-call at the end of the NFC Championship is still going strong, and it appears the NFL will at least consider a change to the replay system which would allow penalties to be reviewed.Colin thinks this it’s a big mistake for the NFL to even pay lip service to the idea, and any changes that are made because of it would be a massive overreaction. First, it’s just not a good idea. It would make the game worse by creating a thousand of its own logistical problems like, what’s reviewable? What’s not? What’s the standard to reverse a call? No one knows. Can you imagine what the public outcry will be when a game-winning pick-six is called back after defensive holding is seen on replay? Take a guess.Just like MLB overreacting to a tie in the All-Star Game by putting playoff home field advantage on the line was a huge mistake, the NFL would making another one by making long-term changes to replay over one call in one game.Overall, Championship weekend was relatively flag free, seemingly an NFL reaction to a year of the fans and media complaining there were way too many. The result was some bad missed calls on both sides and one that sticks out because it was at the end of the game. People need to get over it and move on.
Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now July 23, 2015 11 min read This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. In the new film Ex Machina, a reclusive billionaire invents a robotic artificial intelligence. To test whether his invention is indistinguishable from a human being, he helicopters-in a young engineer to see if he will fall in love with the robot.Today, making machines and humans indistinguishable from each other is no longer science fiction, it’s good business. In fact, a wave of startups are part of a new trend that promises to radically simplify our lives by making it harder to determine whether we’re communicating with a person or computer code.In my last post I discussed how I’ve personally used some of these services and in this post, I’ll go deeper into what this trend is all about. I’ll look into how pairing new technologies with human assistants will result in tremendous new services, which promise to enhance our lives — that is, until the robots completely take over and destroy us all. *insert nervous laugh here.*Related: Why ‘Assistant-As-App’ Might Be the Next Big Tech TrendMessaging is the MediumOn a typical day, I’ll chat with colleagues on Slack. Later, I’m sure to receive a message from a friend on WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Then, on my way home, I’ll use good old SMS to let my wife know I’m on my way. What’s been absent from these conversations is commerce. Although messaging is the way users communicate with each other, it’s not how they interact with businesses. That is, until now.Of all the ways humans communicate, texting might be the most direct. Text carries less superfluous information than other ways of sending information. With text, there are no voice intonations to decipher or accents to understand, no facial gestures to interpret, and no body language to translate. Text is something computers can understand and process quickly and it’s why messaging is a great place for humans and A.I. to work together to serve customer needs.Although terms like “conversational commerce” and “invisible apps” have floated around the web recently, neither is quite right for describing what I’m seeing.Instead, I’ve proposed “assistant-as-app” to mean: an interface designed to enable users to accomplish complex tasks through a natural dialogue with an assistant.Note that the assistant does not have to be a real person, at least not all the time. The assistant could be a human using automated script to send messages or reminders at appropriate times. It could also be a group of people interacting with customers through an online persona. Or, it could be an A.I. that occasionally calls in human help when it’s stuck. For example, Mindy is there for me when I use Vida Health to track what I eat, Tim helps me book travel on Native, and Amy schedules my meetings through X.ai. However, when I get a response from Mindy, Tim, or Amy, I have no idea if it was a human or machine that sent the message on their behalf. With an assistants-as-app, the distinction between who’s doing the messaging isn’t always clear — sometimes is a bot and sometimes it’s not.Better Than BotsThe messaging interface used by assistant-as-app services is an effective way to help people get more out of the Internet. Since it looks like a chat, interactions feel familiar. As I mentioned in a previous post, people don’t want something truly new, they want the familiar done differently (see the California Roll Rule). The power of the conversational interface is that it shields the end user from having to learn anything new. We already know how to chat, so making requests is easy. An assistant-as-app leverages well-trained humans to use complex technology behind the scenes. The assistant can process requests that would otherwise require several steps, time-consuming analysis, or pro tools the layperson is unlikely to have the knowledge or patience to use. What is it Good For?An assistant-as-app is suited for certain scenarios. Here are three cases where I expect assistant-as-app services to excel:1. When There’s One Goal and Too Many OptionsAccording to a recent survey by Carat, a global media agency, “41% of people feel overwhelmed by the wealth of choices on the web, making it hard for them to make purchase decisions.”When booking a flight for example, customers have only one objective — to find the best deal. They don’t need so many dizzying options, they just need one, as long as it’s the right one. Before travelers started booking by themselves online, a good travel agent could help narrow down the choices. But today, we’re on our own. When we stopped calling travel agents, we implicitly chose cheaper tickets over better service. However, with an assistants-as-app, the consumer no longer has to compromise. With an app like Native, the traveler can text instructions to an assistant such as, “I have a workshop that starts at 9am and ends at 5pm in Midtown Manhattan. Book me the cheapest trip to and from San Francisco on the 29th. Red eye is ok.” The human Native assistant can then quickly cull the options using sophisticated tools and return the best two or three options. It should be noted that an assistant-as-app is not ideal for situations when the user enjoys browsing or where the best option is subjective. For example, for many people, clothes shopping itself is part of the fun. Being told the best choice may not be all that helpful. However, there are plenty of opportunities to use an assistant-as-app where the user has to weed through too many choices, particularly in enterprise applications. I envision a future where complex tasks, like running a marketing campaign to increase site traffic or launching a coupon offer, are executed by an assistant. Instead of asking the busy user to navigate a complicated web interface, an assistant-as-app will do the heavy lifting and offer up just a few of the best options.Related: People Don’t Want Something Truly New, They Want the Familiar Done Differently.2. When Data Collection is Easy but Analysis is HardAn assistant-as-app is particularly good at off-loading the burden of analysis. For example, the Vida app leverages dietitians using backend tools to help diagnose food sensitivities and allergies. With Vida, the user simply has to take pictures of their food before each meal. Then the assistant compares what was eaten to how the user felt, looking for what may be causing the adverse reaction. This sort of analysis is a burden for the user but is easy for a skilled agent using pro-tools.The assistant becomes even more powerful when she, he, or it, can access disparate sources of information. Processing data is a headache for users but is an opportunity for assistant-as-app companies. For example, when I book my travel on Native, my assistant already knows the balance of my various frequent flyer programs and can suggest flying one airline over another so I can claim a free flight on my next trip. If a traveler grants access to his or her calendar, the assistant can book travel around meetings as well as account for car travel times to and from the airport. My message back from Native read, “I’ve found these two flights on United that will give you plenty of time to make your last meeting of the day. Which should I book for you?”For enterprises swimming in data, an assistant-as-app could be a godsend. Imagine an assistant continually optimizing your website. Instead of hiring someone with these rare talents, specially trained assistants could use the latest tools to continually run tests to increase conversion rates. Interestingly, these sorts of enterprise tools don’t require much new technology or any A.I. All the testing and number crunching would get handled by a well-trained human while requests and updates would be handed through the messaging interface. The site owner would just need to provide access, approve the tests, and ok subsequent roll-outs of successful changes.Imagine the collective sigh of relief from busy workers who no longer need to learn how to use yet another vendor’s complicated online tools or manage yet another dashboard. With an assistant-as-app, just ask and ye shall receive. In addition to complex interfaces, assistant-as-app services are particularly well-suited for small screens. Customers have difficulty poking around drop-down tabs on mobile phone and doing so on a smart watch is impossible. However, reciting requests to an assistant-as-app in plain English is easy on web, phone, or watch.3. When it Feels Like a FriendWorking with an assistant through a conversational interface should feel like interacting with a friend. These apps work best when the user trusts the assistant’s unbiased recommendations. However, if a friend started chatting you up to make a buck, you’d quickly see through the scheme. Similarly, an assistant-as-app is best suited for subscription models where the value lies in being an objective filter. If Native started recommending specific hotels over others based on earning a commission or if Vida began hawking vitamins, I’d quickly lose trust.Another friend-like characteristic of an assistant-as-app has to do with the pace of interactions. When sending a friend a text, you’d expect to wait a while before they respond. Likewise, assistant-as-apps are for when you need something soon but not immediately. Culling the right options, running tests, or analyzing data takes time and assistants are not well suited to provide instant feedback quite yet. Who Needs Humans? But isn’t voice recognition powered by artificial intelligence enough? Not really and not yet.Though Google and Apple are working on perfecting virtual assistants like Siri, made of 100% computer code, such fully automated technologies are only good for specific scenarios — namely, when the user needs immediate information for simple queries. In contrast, an assistant-as-app excels when a request takes several steps and is done better with a human touch.Just last week I found myself desperately trying to talk to a human when calling my credit card company. After several failed attempts to get through the automated voice response, I called out my request in a mechanical, over-articulated, robot-sounding voice. “REP-REE-ZENT-A-TIV,” I said, sounding like Robby the Robot.“OK, let me get someone to help you with that,” the automated voice finally responded, although I wasn’t sure if by “that” she meant my credit card problem or my weirdo-who-speaks-like-a-robot problem. Although talking in a robot voice is perhaps a humorous example, it makes the point that users still have to structure their requests in a way machines can understand.Today, there are primarily three solutions. Either send users through fully automated prompts (like an annoying call routing robot), send them to human helpers, or — the most common and perhaps most burdensome option for the user — ask them to fend for themselves on the company’s website. However, as A.I. becomes more capable, assistant-as-app services will provide a better alternative. As A.I improves, each human assistant will be able to serve more users. Assistant-as-app services leveraging highly adept humans working with increasingly sophisticated technology, will be the way we interact with an array of businesses in the years to come. That is, unless the robots take over first. What Do You Think?Do you think the assistant-as-app trend will catch-on? Do you use any assistant-as-apps? What yet-untapped opportunities do you see for assistant-as-app in the years to come?Related: 4 Ways to Use Psychology to Win Your Competition’s Customers Enroll Now for Free This story originally appeared on NirAndFar.com
Hackers in China attempted to access over 20 million active accounts on Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s Taobao e-commerce website using Alibaba’s own cloud computing service, according to a state media report posted on the Internet regulator’s website.Analysts said the report from The Paper led to the price of Alibaba’s U.S.-listed shares falling as much as 3.7 percent in late Wednesday trade. An Alibaba spokesman on Thursday said the company detected the attack in “the first instance”, reminded users to change passwords, and worked closely with the police investigation.Chinese companies are grappling a sharp rise in the number of cyber attacks, and cyber security experts say firms have a long way to go before defenses catch up to U.S. counterparts. In the latest case, hackers obtained a database of 99 million usernames and passwords from a number of websites, according to a separate report on a website managed by the Ministry of Public Security. The hackers then used Alibaba’s cloud computing platform to input the details into Taobao. Of the 99 million usernames, they found 20.59 million were also being used for Taobao accounts, the ministry website said. The hackers started inputting the details into Taobao in mid-October and were discovered in November, at which time Alibaba immediately reported the case to police, the ministry website said. The hackers have since been caught, it said.Alibaba’s systems discovered and blocked the vast majority of log-in attempts, according to the ministry website. The hackers used compromised accounts to fake orders on Taobao, a practice known as “brushing” in China and used to raise sellers’ rankings, the newspaper said. The hackers also sold accounts to be used for fraud, it said.Alibaba’s spokesman said the hackers rented the cloud computing service, but declined to comment on security measures designed to stop the system being used for the attack. He said they could have used any such service, and that the attack was not aided by any possible loopholes in Alibaba’s platform.”Alibaba’s system was never breached,” the spokesman said. The number of accounts, 20.59 million, represents about 1 out of every 20 annual active buyers on Alibaba’s China retail marketplaces.(Reporting by Paul Carsten; Additional reporting by Beijing Newsroom; Editing by Christopher Cushing) Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Windows 10 Game Mode and Drivers: what we know so far by Martin Brinkmann on January 18, 2017 in Windows – Last Update: July 05, 2017 – 8 commentsMicrosoft will introduce a truckload of new features in the Creators Update for Windows 10, including the new Game Mode feature and one where drivers may get installed automatically when certain Store games are downloaded and installed on a device running Windows 10.While I’m not playing that many games anymore, I’m still a gamer at heart and interested in new gaming related features. This article describes what we know so far, asks questions, and points out potential issues that these two new features may introduce.Lets start with Game Mode.Game ModeUpdate: Windows Central has additional information that the site states it got directly from Microsoft. According to the information, Game Mode ensures that the device’s processor and graphics adapter focus on the Game Mode process.Game Mode is said to be designed to improve consistency more than it is raw performance. So, expect less frame drops in taxing scenes when game mode is enabled.Microsoft told Windows Central that UWP applications will benefit more from it, but that it is not limited to Store bought games. The reason is that UWP is more standardized, and thus easier to improve. Some Store games will even come with Game Mode enabled by default.Game Mode can be disabled, and it will be turned off automatically when you tab out of the game or minimize it. EndGame Mode was first discovered in the end of December 2016. The reveal offered no information on the feature apart from its name and file name (gamemode.dll).Microsoft revealed in January 2017 then that it started to add game mode controls to the most recent Windows 10 Insider Build, and that it would add the functionality later on in the development cycle.Game Mode will be a part of the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update. The update will be released in April 2017 if the schedule holds. If you run the latest Windows 10 Insider Build on the Fast Ring, you can bring up the Game Mode control interface by pressing Windows-G to activate Game DVR mode. The option reads: Game Mode makes gaming your PC’s top priority to improve your game’s quality. The control is not enabled yet though, and does nothing at this point in time.Microsoft has this to say about game mode:Our goal is to make Windows 10 the best Windows ever for gaming. With the Creators Update, we’re introducing a new feature called Game Mode. Windows Insiders will start seeing some of the visual elements for Game Mode this week, with the feature being fully operational in builds shortly thereafter. Our vision is for Game Mode to optimize your Windows 10 PC for increased performance in gaming. This is a big update for Windows; we’re looking forward to Insiders getting their hands on this new feature for further testing, and we’ll have much more to share on what it is and how it works soon, so stayed tuned. What we know is that Game Mode is added to the same interface that powers Game DVR mode. Some think that it will be tied to Game DVR on Windows 10, but I don’t think this is entirely clear yet.If that is the case, it would mean that anyone who disabled Game DVR on their Windows 10 machine cannot make use of the mode.It could be that Game Mode is added to the interface, but also elsewhere so that it can be enabled for games. What is certain is that it will be available for all games, and not just those from Windows Store.Another uncertainty in regards to Game Mode concerns what it does. It will improve performance when activated, but what does that mean? Will it work similarly to other game boosting programs? They are more or less snake oil unless you run a very old system that is low on RAM and free cpu cycles all the time.Microsoft has more options than third-party software when it comes to improving the performance of processes. I’m skeptical that it will boost performance by much though.Graphics Card driver installationsMicrosoft plans to add a new feature to Windows Store that enables companies that publish games to require certain graphics driver versions. The idea behind the feature is to make sure that games run well on customer systems by making sure recent drivers are installed. This takes care of poor experiences caused by older drivers, and makes the process of updating graphics drivers more pleasant for users. This sounds like a good feature, and it is likely that many users will appreciate Microsoft taking the initiative here to make the whole process easier for them. The question that stands in the room is whether users will have any say in the matter. If it is possible to disable the feature, or make it prompt you, then I don’t have any issues with it.If the installations are automated, and without user interaction however, it opens a can of worms. Customers may have reasons for not wanting certain drivers on their devices. The recent Nvidia driver update issue is all that is needed to understand why the automatic installation of drivers may not be a good thing.Maybe a certain driver is required because another game does not play well with newer ones. Or, it is causing other issues on the system, or introduces features that users don’t require. Now You: What’s your opinion on Game Mode and Driver installations?SummaryArticle NameWindows 10 Game Mode and Drivers: what we know so farDescriptionThe article looks at the two new Windows 10 features Game Mode and automatic graphics driver installation; both part of the Windows 10 Creators Update.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisement
Portrait Display service makes millions of HP, Fujitsu and Philips notebooks vulnerable by Martin Brinkmann on April 26, 2017 in Security – 4 commentsSecurity researchers at Sec Consult discovered a vulnerability in Portrait Display, a software used by OEMs such as HP and Fujitsu on millions of notebooks.Portrait Display SDK Service is used by various OEMs such as HP or Fujitsu as an on screen display that provides notebook users with options to tune displays. The core idea behind the service is to provide users with better and more direct display controls. The application goes under different names, as it is rebranded usually by OEMs when it ships with company notebooks. HP customers may know it as HP Display Assistant, HP Display Control, HP My Display, or HP Mobile Display Assistant, Fujtsu customers as Fujitsu DisplayView Click, and Philips customers as Philips SmartControl.Portrait Display service vulnerabilityscreenshot via Sec ConsultSecurity researchers of Sec Consult discovered that the PdiService’s permissions give every authenticated user write access on the service, and that attackers may execute arbitrary code by changing the service’s binary path. Additionally, since PdiService is executed with SYSTEM permissions, it results in privilege escalation. The researchers highlight the method which they used to discover the vulnerability, and how to exploit it on the company blog.More interesting from a user’s point of view is that they offer two solutions to patch customer systems. Users may want to check the installed Services on their Windows machine to find out whether their installation is affected by the issue. You can launch the Services Manager with a tap on the Windows-key, typing services.msc, and hitting the Enter-key on the keyboard.Another option, one that may work better, is to run the command sc query pdiservice from the command line to see if it is installed on the device.Portrait, the developer of the application, released an update version of the software which patches the security issue.Affected customers may want to head over to the Portrait website to download the security patch and install it on affected devices. Simply run the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to update local files so that they are no longer vulnerable to the described attack. The second option is to run a command on the local system to remove the Authenticated Users group permission of the service.Tap on the Windows-key, type cmd.exe, hold down Shift-key and Ctrl-key, and hit the Enter-key to launch an elevated command prompt.Run the following command: sc sdset pdiservice D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA) (A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;IU)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;SU)Closing WordsPortrait reacted quickly to the reported vulnerability, and it has released a patch already. This is not always the case when it comes to software that ships with notebooks or desktop PCs. So called bloatware is still a big issue today as it — usually — slows down the PC and may introduce security vulnerabilities on top of all that. This is not the first time that security issues were found in OEM software. Last year, it was discovered that OEM update programs put PCs at risk as well.My suggestion is, usually, to remove bloatware either manually, or by running programs such as Decrap or PC Decrapifier. (via Born)Now You: How do you handle bloatware on your systems?SummaryArticle NamePortrait Display service makes millions of HP, Fujitsu and Philips notebooks vulnerableDescriptionSecurity researchers at Sec Consult discovered a vulnerability in Portrait Display, a software used by OEMs such as HP and Fujitsu on millions of notebooks.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisement
Simplewall 3.0 Beta First Look by Martin Brinkmann on May 13, 2019 in Software – 25 commentsSimplewall 3.0 is the next major release of the free open source firewall and security software for Microsoft’s Windows operating system. We reviewed Simplewall back in 2017 for the first time.A beta version was released on May 7, 2019 for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. While it is possible that things may change until the final release, it is more or less ready for release already.Simplewall 3.0 is fully compatible with previous versions. It is not suggested to install the beta version on a production system, but if you do, all settings and preferences should remain available in the new version. The same will be true for the final release. The new version drops support for Windows Vista. Simplewall 3.0 is compatible with Windows 7 or newer versions of the Windows operating system only.Simplewall 3.0Simplewall 3.0 works for the most part just like previous versions. Enable filtering to block applications from making outbound connections unless you permit it. First enabling filtering leads to a large number of prompts but once those are dealt with, e.g. by blocking some and allowing others, it becomes less of an annoyance to deal with new prompts as the number decreases significantly. The Simplewall interface features new options: you find new services and UWP application tabs, access to the rules list in the main window, and a new network connections monitor. The Network Connections monitor is labeled as beta right now. It displays all open connections of the system when you access it or hit the refresh button. It is not a real-time monitor as the listing is not updated automatically but only on user request. Just hit the refresh button to refresh the listing. The monitor lists all application names, ports, destinations, protocols, and other information in its interface. From there, it is relatively easy to create new rules for individual processes. Just right-click a process and select “create rule” to get started. Doing so opens the rules creation wizard to allow or block connections based on selected parameters. You may also open the folder the file is stored in to investigate the process further. The Services tab lists Windows Services and you may create rules for individual services there. UWP apps are only available on Windows 10, but the apps listing displays these applications again with options to allow or deny them access to the Internet or network.Windows users who use high DPI monitors benefit from improved DPI support next to all that. Simplewall 3.0 includes several fixes, listview resizing and sorting improvements, and some cosmetic fixes. Blacklist mode is removed in the new version.Closing WordsMy verdict from 2017 still stands: Simplewall is a great free firewall program for Windows. It still has some rough edges and requires a bit of knowledge when it comes to the creation of rules. The future of my favorite Windows firewall app Windows Firewall Control is unclear as the program has been acquired by Malwarebytes in 2018. The program is free and version 6.0 of Windows Firewall Control was released in early 2019.Simplewall is a great alternative, some say it is even better. Now You: do you use a firewall app?SummaryArticle NameSimplewall 3.0 Beta First LookDescriptionSimplewall 3.0 is the next major release of the free open source firewall and security software for Microsoft’s Windows operating system.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisement
PCI Express 5.0 specs: double bandwidth by Martin Brinkmann on June 01, 2019 in Hardware – 4 commentsPCI Express 4.0 motherboards, Solid State Drives. and other devices are not widely available yet, but that has not stopped the Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) from releasing PCI Express 5.0 specifications on May 29, 2019.Compared to PCI Express 4.0, PCI Express 5.0 promises double the bandwidth and other improvements while maintaining backwards compatibility with existing PCI Express peripherals.PCI Express 4.0 doubled the bandwidth, frequency, and transfer rate of PCIe 3.0, and PCI Express 5.0 is designed to quadruple it.Target markets for PCI Express 5.0 include gaming, visual computing, AI, storage, and machine learning. The new specification increases performance in the high-performance markets including artificial intelligence, machine learning, gaming, visual computing, storage and networking.Tools like HwInfo or CPU-Z may help you find out which PCI Express standards the PC you run this on supports (if any).PCI Express 5.0 specification detailsBandwidth of 128 GB/s, 32 GT/s, 32.0 GHz frequency, and 128b/130b encoding.Backwards compatible with all major PCI Express standards (4.0, 3.x, 2.x, and 1.x).Features new backwards compatible CEM connector for add-in cards.Support for extended tags and credits.Electrical changes improve signal integrity and mechanical performance of connectors.Closing WordsMost existing devices don’t support PCI Express 4.0 and general availability of PCI Express 4.0 supporting hardware such as motherboards or Solid State Drives is just about to get better in 2019.AMD announced in January 2019 that the company’s X570 motherboard chipset would support PCI Express 4.0, and that some 300 and 400-series motherboards could be updated to support PCI Express 4.0 at least partially.Phison revealed a PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD controller in January 2019 as well and managed to gain 4 GB/s of sequential reads and 4.2 of write performance out of a hardware setup back then. With PCI Express 5.0 announced, many might wonder whether it makes senses to jump on the PCI Express 4.0 bandwagon or wait until devices that support PCI Express 5.0 come out.PCI Express 4.0 was announced in 2017 and adoption is just about starting in the consumer market. It is not too far fetched to assume that PCI Express 5.0 will need 18 to 24 months at the minimum before devices start to become available for consumers.
